From Hollywood to Kapuso studios

It’s evident that Hollywood dancer-choreographer Fusion has a soft spot for the Philippines.

His last two girlfriends were Filipino-Americans, volunteered Fusion, whose real name is Ruben Monet Ludlow.

“I live in San Diego, California, and I made lots of Filipino friends there,” he said.

Not surprising

Truth to tell, he’s not much surprised at the warm welcome he received when he arrived in Manila recently. (He will stay here for a month to choreograph the planned GMA 7 Sunday variety show “Party Pilipinas,” which will take over the slot of “SOP” starting March 28.)

What stunned him was the “level of talent” that greeted him when he started conducting workshops with local dancers.

“In other countries I visited, I had to work double time...but here, I was impressed. Filipinos are strong, intelligent dancers who really understand what it means to deliver a good performance,” he said.

He taught the local dancers the style he created, Kung-Fu Hip-Hop—a mixture of “martial arts and Lindy Hop, a kind of underground swing.”

The way he explained it, his signature move can be a tad complicated. “Lindy Hop is high energy and explosive. Then I put in a little capoeira, along with Shaolin moves and break dancing. There’s a lot of Jacky Chan in it, too. But the Filipino dancers adapted well. They got the move quickly.”

Track record

That’s quite a compliment, considering that it came from the same dancer-choreographer who had worked with such global megastars as Will Smith, Beyoncé Knowles, Missy Elliot, Akon and Diana Ross.

“I’m pretty lucky because I never ever work with boring people,” quipped Fusion who’s a friend of GMA 7 resident choreographer Geleen Eugenio.

He choreographed the Diana Ross World Tour that took him to Australia, Japan and Europe.

He asserted that the music biz’s biggest divas, Diana and Beyoncé, were no prima donnas.

“They’re famous all over the world, but in real life, they are normal people,” he said.

He described Beyoncé as a “true professional who always gives her best. She’s fun to work with.”

He reserved highest praise for Will Smith whose “Men in Black” music video was Fusion’s first big break as dancer in 1997.

“Will was a regular guy. He cracked jokes as if we had known each other for a long time. It was a pleasant experience,” he recalled.

He hopes his month-long stay in the Philippines will be just as enjoyable.

Should he meet his nth Filipino girlfriend?

“I’m single. I’m open to meeting someone special,” he said.

Party Pilipinas is an "all-party and all-positive vibes" show, according to the Corporate Communications Department of GMA Network and the show's new production manager, Ruth Mariñas. Mariñas takes over the post of Ramel David, who in turn replaced Hazel Abonita. Through an interview via Chika Minute in 24 Oras, Ogie Alcasid stated that Party Pilipinas will circle the entire country and hopefully the whole world.

The four main hosts Regine Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid, Janno Gibbs, and Jaya are retained, along with the R&B Royalties Kyla and Jay-R, plus, La Diva.
In addition, Rachelle Ann Go and Mark Bautista, both Viva artists and now turning back as Kapuso are now joining the Asia's party capital.

Louie Ignacio left the show after the April 25 episode. It was temporarily directed by Rommel Gacho from May 2 to the May 23 episode. Two directors were replaced namely Mark A. Reyes and Rico Gutierrez.

It started the trend of presenting its upcoming episodes through "themed" teasers. The show also started promoting upcoming episodes a week in advance, a far cry from the usual TV promotion timeline of three days in advance for weekly variety shows.

On June 13, the program created Philippine TV history as it aired in 3D.
Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez announced their wedding engagement on August 8, 2010 episode. Regine Velasquez also had her pre-nuptial message and confirmation of pregnancy in Party Pilipinas. Janno Gibbs returned to the show on November 28, 2010 after months of allegedly suffering depression. PBA player Rich Alvarez and RnB Princess Kyla wedding proposal happened in Party Pilipanas dated February 13, 2011. In addition, Jolina Magdangal and Mark Escueta informed the public that they are engaged.

The show celebrated its one-year anniversary on March 27, 2011. The show was held at 4 key cities in the Philippines: Manila (GMA Studio 7), Baguio City (Melvin Jones Grandstand), Davao City (Rizal Park) and Cebu City (Fuente Osmeña Circle) with four directors namely Noel Cabacungan, Rommel Gacho, Ding Bolanos and Mark A. Reyes. The anniversary episode also included the launch of GMA's Summer Station ID/Slogan of 2011, "Halo-Halo Ang Summer Saya"

From April 17 - May 15, 2011, GB Sampedro alongside Direk Mark A. Reyes headed the show. Sampedro replaced Direk Rico Gutierrez because the latter had resigned from co-directing the show. Treb Monteras II replaced Sampedro from directing the show starting July 24, 2011 episode to present.

Party Pilipinas international guests include U-KISS (March 28, 2010, June 13, 2010), Jason Derulo (July 25, 2010), Dan Hill (February 6, 2011) and Far East Movement (March 13, 2011).

The show was nominated at 24th Star Awards for TV as Best Musical Variety Show. The show received its first award at Catholic Mass Media Awards 2011 as Best Entertainment Program.
